Apple reportedly spent years developing an iPhone with a foldable display to rival Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold. Nonetheless, it appears that the iPhone maker is taking the Huawei Mate Xs 2 route rather than copying the Galaxy Z Fold5’s design.
Since the flexible plastic cover of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is not nearly as scratch-resistant as that of conventional smartphones, the majority of vertically foldable smartphones currently on the market are based on this design. In other words, the main display is folded inwards to protect it from scratches during transportation. The smartphone can still be used without opening it thanks to an additional external display that is shielded by Gorilla Glass Victus on several models.
The newest information from Jeff Pu, however, indicates that Apple is defying this trend. The company’s first iPhone with a foldable display will have an OLED panel that opens outward, measuring 7.9 inches diagonally, much like the Huawei Mate Xs 2. This has several benefits even if it could have drawbacks in terms of scratch resistance.
Smartphones may be made lighter and thinner by doing away with the extra display. The stylishly curved panel that encircles the phone’s case on one side also makes it possible to take selfies with the primary camera without opening the device. The “iPhone Fold” would only be somewhat bigger than the Huawei Mate Xs 2 with a diagonal of 7.9 inches.
According to Jeff Pu, the foldable iPhone is expected to hit stores in 2026, coinciding with the release of the iPhone 18. As to the present timeline, a 20.3-inch diagonal foldable MacBook display is scheduled to enter full production by the end of 2025; nevertheless, there have been earlier speculations indicating that the gadget won’t be released until 2027.
