Following EU law, Apple is now at last permitting devices, albeit with limitations and conditions. iOS users in the EU can now download third-party apps straight from the web, but developers have to follow certain rules, according to a recent announcement. Apple is going to introduce a notification procedure for iOS product malware prevention and app screening to increase security.

Android users have long had the opportunity to sideload or install third-party programs from sources other than the native app store, with little to no opposition from the operating system and no restrictions on where the software can be obtained. For some, having the freedom to select which apps are installed on their iPhones is a draw. The intricacy of sideloading apps on iOS has been one of the drawbacks of owning an Apple device. The internet giant is adjusting its sideloading limitations once again to comply with EU law, after releasing the floodgates last month.

Apple has modified its app policy in response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which aims to maintain competition in the tech sector (via 9to5Mac). It is specifically supporting a new initiative dubbed Web Distribution, which aims to give developers the option to distribute their apps directly from their websites rather than just through the App Store or third-party app stores that comply with the strict new rules that were unveiled last month. This means that iOS users will now occasionally be able to download third-party software straight from the web, much like sideloading on Android devices.

Apple has added a few requirements, though. For example, EU developers must be registered in the Apple Developer Program. Additionally, they have to be in good standing, and the only way to download apps is through a domain that is registered with App Store Connect. This implies that iOS device customers won’t be able to utilize alternate third-party websites that offer app downloads, for example. Developers will have to provide information about how they handle governmental matters and use the data of app users. They also need to take into account some minor costs related to the EU version of the Apple Developer Program.
