A while back, 3D models of the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max were unveiled, providing further context to earlier rumors that Apple intended to raise the screen sizes from 6.1″ and 6.7″ to 6.27″ and 6.85″. The phones will be bigger as a result, but not as big as they could have been.

Industry insiders are quoted by the Korean journal Sisa Journal-E as saying that Apple has created a “Border Reduction Structure,” or BRS, which accomplishes just what it says on the tin: it reduces bezel size.

With dimensions of 149.6 x 71.45 x 8.25 mm for the iPhone 16 Pro and 163 x 77.58 x 8.25 mm for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, these devices will be roughly 3 mm higher and 1 mm wider than the previous iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

But all four models will have displays with BRS, not only the Pros. Nevertheless, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will sport screens that are identical to those of their predecessors, according to information that is now accessible (the refresh rate will stay at 60 Hz; an improvement to 120 Hz is planned for the iPhone 17 generation).

It’s interesting to note that bezel reduction ran into problems with heat dissipation. The three display suppliers that Apple works with—Samsung Display, LG Display, and BOE, will all implement its straightforward solution.

One insider asserts that BRS technology is not seen by companies as particularly challenging. But when mass production begins, Cupertino has the option to reallocate manufacturing quantities across firms if one of them encounters difficulties.
