As it did in the previous year, Samsung starts 2024 with a full calendar of phone releases that extends until the late summer. In contrast to last year, artificial intelligence is anticipated to play a major role in this year’s parade of new Galaxy phones.
Samsung has previously stated as much. The phone manufacturer predicted back in November that on-device AI will play a major role in its projected 35 million phone sales in the upcoming year, representing a 15% increase year over year.
“Up until now, we haven’t seen mobile AI ignite that in truly meaningful ways,” stated Wonjoon Choi, executive VP and head of R&D for Samsung’s mobile business, in a post announcing Samsung’s focus on AI for the upcoming year. “Mobile technology has an incredible power to enable connection, productivity, creativity, and more for people around the world.” “Galaxy AI is our most comprehensive intelligence offering to date, and it will change how we think about our phones forever.”
We’ll be able to glimpse Samsung’s plans earlier than usual. Although the date of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Unpacked presentation, when we’re probably going to see its first big phones of the year, hasn’t been announced, speculation points to January 17. That would be Samsung’s earliest flagship phone unveiling in a while.
However, it appears like Samsung intends to showcase significantly enhanced hardware in 2024, so why not begin working on that now? These are the things that we anticipate seeing from Samsung in 2024, not just in January.
Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24 Ultra
Every year, Samsung releases an update to the Galaxy S lineup, and 2024 shouldn’t be any different. This time, the Galaxy S24 lineup is expected to receive the customary trio of new handsets. Apart from the normal flagship, it is probable that we will be receiving a Galaxy S24 Plus and a Galaxy S24 Ultra.
If the alleged Galaxy S24 specs sheet that surfaced late in December is any indication, the Ultra is expected to provide the biggest changes. The S24 Ultra is expected to move to a titanium frame, similar to what the iPhone 15 Pro models did in 2023, while the S24 and S24 Plus are expected to retain the same aluminum chassis as their predecessors. The end product ought to be a phone that is both possibly lighter and more resilient.
The phone’s telephoto lens is anticipated to have the biggest alteration with the S24 Ultra; speculations indicate that one of the lenses will get an update to a 50MP sensor. The specifications sheet claims a 10x zoom, yet according to certain accounts, the S24 Ultra will only zoom
The three phones are expected to share other specifications. For instance, a rumor is that Samsung would provide a brighter display with a maximum brightness of 2,600 nits. It looks like that feature will be available for all Galaxy S24 models. Furthermore, every phone in North America, at least, is anticipated to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 system on a chip, which boasts quicker speed, improved power efficiency, and on-device support for artificial intelligence. For the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus, Samsung may use an Exynos 2400 system-on-a-chip in other regions of the world (more on that in a bit).
The new AI features that Samsung has hinted at may hold the real power of the Galaxy S24 phones. Samsung Gauss, a generative AI that operates locally on phones, is one potential inclusion. As Gauss wouldn’t require a cloud connection to operate, it ought to provide significantly faster performance for activities like email composition and document summarization. The ability to generate graphics and do quick translations are further possible functionalities.
According to Samsung, Gauss will be able to provide better text prediction and assist with emails. Additionally, it will provide document summaries in the form of simple cliff notes. Additionally, it will be able to translate text within apps, eliminating the need to use Google Translate.
Additional AI features linked to photographs and photos have been hinted at by an early leak of the One UI 6.1 upgrade, which is anticipated to run on the upcoming Galaxy S24 phones. AI-created wallpapers will be available for you to utilize in order to customize the device, and the S24 may come equipped with sophisticated photo editing capabilities akin to those found in Pixel 8s. (Magic Editor allows you to alter every aspect of a photograph, including the lighting and subject placement.) It would also be feasible to add other features to video editing.
Debut dates for the Galaxy S have been rising earlier and earlier in recent years. According to reports, the Galaxy Unpacked event on January 17 2024 may be our earliest debut date yet. If accurate, that would imply that Galaxy S24 models might be available in stores by the end of January.
Samsung Galaxy A55
Samsung’s midrange lineup has significantly improved over the past few years; the Galaxy A54 from 2023 is among the best inexpensive phones that we evaluated last year. What then does Samsung offer as a follow-up for those seeking a reliable phone at a price lower than the Galaxy S series?
Although there isn’t much information available at this time regarding the suspected Galaxy A55, some leaks reveal a design that seems to take a lot of cues from the S24. That’s not surprising in that the Galaxy A54 looked an awful lot like the Galaxy S23 when it came out in the spring of 2023.
According to rumors, the Galaxy A55 will have a 6.5-inch screen (the A54’s screen is 6.4 inches), and this year’s frame may be made of aluminum rather than plastic. Anticipate an Exynos 1480 coupled with 8GB of RAM, an improvement from the Exynos 1380 CPU that drove the A54. Similar to its predecessor, the Galaxy A55 is anticipated to include a 25W wired charging capability and a 5,000 mAh battery.
Regarding the camera, it appears that the Galaxy A55 will include the same 50MP primary camera as the A54, along with a re-design of the 12MP ultrawide and 5MP macro sensors that completed the A54’s rear camera configuration. This isn’t inherently a negative thing because the A54’s primary camera uses the same sensor as Samsung’s flagship models.
The main concern we have with the Galaxy A55 is whether or not AI-powered features will be available on it as well, or if Samsung will reserve those features for its more expensive flagships.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6
In the second half of the year, Samsung’s focus has shifted to foldable, just as the beginning of a new year brings new Galaxy S models. That most likely indicates the release of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6, the most recent versions of Samsung’s renowned folding gadgets, in 2024.
Although there aren’t many reliable rumors currently circulating regarding the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, those two gadgets should be under a lot of strain. Despite their respective achievements, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are no longer able to hold the title of best foldable phone. In our opinion, the OnePlus Open is the best option in the category, but for flip phones, the Motorola Razr+ is superior.
What reaction does Samsung give? According to recent reports, the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s cover display—which is currently 3.5 inches on the Z Flip 5—will grow to 3.9 inches once more. One of the ways that the Razr surpasses Samsung’s flip phone is with its more practical cover display, so it’s encouraging to learn that this year’s model may be better.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 might have a size increase, according to the same report. More specifically, a bigger cover display screen and a smaller bezel might be seen on the Z Fold 6. Although it would be a significant departure from the Z Fold’s thin design, the foldable might become more user-friendly as a result.
As usual, there are hopes that Samsung will release a foldable that is more reasonably priced; at $999, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is currently the least expensive alternative. Rumors that Samsung is developing a foldable smartphone that will cost between $400 and $500 have been refuted. This past summer, a rumor suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold FE would make its debut in 2024.
We hope Samsung in 2024
Every time Samsung releases a new phone this year, AI will be the feature to watch, and people will always be curious about the price that Samsung charges for its phones. (Good news on that front for the imminent S24 release; reports indicate that the price of the Galaxy S24 won’t alter.)
With the introduction of the Galaxy S24 rapidly approaching, we should have answers regarding Samsung’s AI intentions soon enough. That occasion will have a significant impact on how Samsung’s future year is defined.
