The next time you misplace anything vital, iOS 18.2’s new functionality for AirTag and other things in the Find My app might just spare you a ton of worry and hassle.

Locating misplaced goods is made simpler using Share Item Location

Share Item Location is a new function in Apple’s Find My app that works with AirTag and other compatible items.

A Share Item option was already available in Find My, but it was designed for the purpose of persistently sharing an AirTag with a close friend or relative. By adding the object to a contact’s personal Find My app, the Share object enables you both to monitor its whereabouts at any time.

However, Share Item Location is different in that it is intended to be transitory and utilized only in the event that an item is misplaced.

How to utilize the recently added AirTag feature in iOS 18.2

To use the new feature, make sure you’re running iOS 18.2, then follow these steps:

  1. Open the Find My app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac
  2. Go to the Items tab
  3. Select the AirTag or other lost item
  4. Navigate down until you see ‘Share Item Location.
  5. Follow the pop-up screens to activate sharing

A shareable link with a map and the current location of your item will be generated by selecting Share Item Location.

Here’s Apple’s full description:

Users can generate a Share Item Location link in the Find My app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Recipients of a link will be able to view a website that shows the location of the item on an interactive map. The website will automatically update when a new location is available and will show a timestamp of the most recent update.

Because this new feature is particularly useful for finding misplaced bags, Apple has teamed with airlines to integrate support within their current customer service channels. Several large airlines already provide help, and more than 15 have committed to doing so in the near future.

Important privacy disclaimer

Although Apple’s approach is designed to protect your privacy, users should be aware that anyone you share the link with will be able to view certain personal data about you.

“The item’s serial number and your Apple Account email or phone number will be visible,” according to the Find My app.

This is a purposeful feature since you want the airline or another third party to be able to get in touch with you quickly while you’re searching. Still, it’s important to note.
