Have you ever left your remote control on the side of your couch or gotten up late to check on your boiler? If this is the case, you will understand the true value of the torch on iOS. One of the most popular and practical features of the greatest iPhones is the flashlight, which can be used straight from the lock screen for many users.
The flashlight has been improved in iOS 18, which was just revealed by Apple at WWDC 2024. New options allow you to adjust the brightness of light more than ever. However, as the new options are only available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and maybe the iPhone 14 Pro, owners of the iPhone 15 are losing out. This is the reason.
An iOS 18 flashlight upgrade, but not for everyone
On iOS 18 beta, you’ll notice that the Dynamic Island pop-up appears somewhat differently when you activate the flashlight. You may now focus the light on a specific region by adjusting the beam spread in addition to the torch’s brightness.
Due to the fact that the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max contain an alternative flash module known as Adaptive True Tone Flash, this new setting is exclusive to those iPhone models. Unlike the conventional True Tone flash featured in later models like the iPhone 15, the Adaptive True Tone flash, which was introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, features an array of nine LEDs that can change patterns, allowing you to tailor the beam.
This might change as OS 18 is still in developer beta, but given the differences in hardware, we anticipate that this functionality will only be available on the 15 Pro and possibly the 14 Pro as well. Although we haven’t had a chance to test the beta on an iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max to be sure, we anticipate that the updates will be included because those iPhones also come with the Adaptive True Tone flash.
Not only will iPhone 15 customers not be able to use the new flashlight setting in iOS 18, but they will also not be able to use Apple Intelligence, the greatest software update for the iPhone in years. Owners of iPhone 15s might consider updating when the iPhone 16 is released later this year if they wish to use Apple Intelligence and an improved flashlight.
