According to early iPhone 15 reports, Apple will transform its smartphone lineup with a number of striking design modifications. And now, it appears that the introduction of a new flagship model will take place at the same time as the change to potentially ground-breaking core material.
Since the release of the 2017 iPhone X, Apple has only utilized stainless steel for its high-end smartphones. However, according to well-known leaker LeaksApplePro, the iPhone 15 Ultra, which is expected to replace the Pro Max line, would include a titanium chassis. Although titanium is far lighter and stronger than stainless steel, it is also exorbitantly expensive.
The good news is that titanium has a strength-to-weight ratio that is superior to stainless steel, offering about the same strength at only 40% of the weight. This is why titanium is frequently utilized in applications that depend on weight, like parts for aircraft according to the new Apple leak.
Additionally, titanium is 3–4 times stronger than stainless steel while weighing the same. This would offer Apple the choice to either reduce the weight of the iPhone 15 Ultra without sacrificing strength, maintain the weight while releasing the strongest smartphone ever, or—more likely—find a happy medium between the two.
Titanium seems like a no-brainer given the advantages, but the expense prevents it from being used frequently in cell phones. Stainless steel costs $1.50 to $1.50 per kilogram, while titanium costs $35 to $50 per kilogram. It’s a huge difference, therefore it comes as a real shock that Apple would introduce a titanium iPhone.
Apple can certainly benefit from the best economies of scale in the market, but even these might not be enough if prices aren’t going up again.
On the one hand, this would be a bitter pill to chew after the nearly universal price rises (US and China excepted) imposed with the iPhone 14 series. The switch to the “Ultra” moniker would be consistent with Apple’s ambition to provide the best-of-the-best category devices in other product lines (regardless of pricing).
Add two front cameras, the first 3nm chipset in the A17, and the reported transition to a Thunderbolt 4-powered USB-C port, and the new Apple leak suggests the company may just create an iPhone that consumers are willing to spend a fortune on. It might also make a lot of sense considering how difficult it is to find ordinary iPhone 14 models.
