South Africa’s Data Regulator Says WhatsApp Can’t Share Users Contact Information

Facebook Inc can’t share any contact data it gathers from WhatsApp clients with its different properties without first acquiring authorization from South Africa’s Information Regulator (IR), the office said on Wednesday.

In January, the Facebook-claimed informing stage WhatsApp educated clients it was setting up another security strategy, under which it could share some information, including area and telephone numbers, with Facebook and its different units like Instagram and Messenger.

The move has started reaction among clients in South Africa and somewhere else, and incited numerous to pick rival administrations like Signal or Telegram.
