Apple makes a concerted effort to position each new iPhone as the most cutting-edge smartphone to date when it is released. But frequently, this is simply not the case. The iPhone often appears to be woefully behind Android, whether it be because of the notch, the absence of a foldable iPhone, or the continued use of the Lightning port.
So let’s look at six ways that the iPhone is falling behind Android.
1. The notch and the dynamic island
With the launching of the iPhone X in 2017, Apple’s controversial notch was first revealed to the world. More than five years later, it is still going strong. Even though Apple has somewhat reduced the size of the notch over time, the base model iPhone you purchase today will still have one, just like your previous iPhone.
Dynamic Island was a feature that Apple included on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max in 2022. Apple placed the front sensor pack into a sizable pill-shaped slot at the top of the iPhone’s screen, replacing the dated notch.
Apple changed the notch to an island, but it didn’t actually get much smaller. Apple’s Dynamic Island is actually more obtrusive than previously because it is located considerably lower on the iPhone’s display than the notch.
When using your iPhone in landscape mode, this is particularly true. When playing video games or watching movies, the majority of people could probably ignore the notch, but Dynamic Island usually stands out like a sore thumb.
In reality, despite the fact that many Android phones have had tiny pinhole cameras for years, the iPhone still seems like it will have a screen display for years to come.
2. A foldable iPhone is just a dream for now
As we all know, foldable phones are nothing new. With the release of the first Galaxy Fold in 2019, Samsung has managed to turn foldable phones from pricey toys into products that practically everyone should take into consideration.
When it comes to foldable phones, the Galaxy Fold is the market leader, but it’s not the only product making a splash. Devices like the Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series have demonstrated how smartphone form factors are being drastically rethought.
However, the iPhone’s design by Apple makes things seem much more conventional. Apple hasn’t yet made a foldable iPhone available, and it doesn’t appear like they have any intentions to do so soon.
Even though that’s not the direction the majority of the industry is going, Apple has always been adamant about doing things in its own special manner. We still don’t have a MacBook with a touchscreen, despite the fact that many Windows laptops have had them for years. Even if folding phones are becoming more widespread, it’s possible that the iPhone may never use this technology.
3. iPhone still doesn’t have USB-C
It’s unfortunate that we have to mention this, but the iPhone still lacks USB-C. The great majority of Android phones converted to USB-C years ago, but since the release of the iPhone 5 in 2013, the iPhone has been confined to the Lightning port.
It’s no secret that keeping the iPhone on Lightning generates revenue for Apple. Apple demands fees from businesses before they can produce Lightning cables and accessories. Even though Apple may have won there, customers did not win at all. When compared to USB-C, the Lightning connector charges more slowly and offers significantly slower data transfer rates.
Apple has been adamant about keeping the iPhone Lightning-only, but in 2022, the EU passed laws requiring manufacturers to include USB-C in all new gadgets they sell in their country. That suggests that a USB-C iPhone is probably coming soon.
4. No reverse wireless charging
Wireless charging is a feature that many people use every day. But while using a charging pad to charge your phone is great, many Android phones can actually become wireless charging pads themselves.
Reverse wireless charging allows you to use your phone’s battery as a portable wireless charging pack. That means you can charge wireless earbuds, smartwatches, or other compatible accessories right from your phone.
Unfortunately, iPhone users do not have access to this feature. While the iPhone has some great exclusive wireless charging features like MagSafe, we’d love to see an iPhone that can wirelessly charge your other devices as well.
5. The iPhone lacks the top smartphone camera in the world
Apple promotes the iPhone’s camera as one of its key selling factors each year. While the iPhone’s camera isn’t a problem, some Android phones just outperform it.
Apple has improved the main camera on the iPhone 14 Pro, increasing the resolution from 12 megapixels to 48 megapixels. But it pales in comparison to the enormous 108-megapixel sensor housed inside the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
And that goes beyond just being a noteworthy figure on a spec sheet. The Galaxy S22 Ultra outperforms the iPhone 14 Pro in terms of color vibrancy, low-light capabilities, and an astonishing 100x digital zoom.
It goes without saying that the iPhone has a fantastic camera. Most people will be content with it. The finest smartphone camera, though, is probably not available on the iPhone if you’re a serious photographer.
6. You have a lot more alternatives with Android
People don’t know what they want until you give it to them, according to a quote from Steve Jobs. Additionally, Apple has developed a reputation for not providing its customers with many options.
There are only a select few options available when purchasing a new iPhone. A cost-effective iPhone SE, two sizes of the standard iPhone, and two sizes of the iPhone Pro models are available. Really, it is.
However, there are a staggering number of options available if you’re looking for an Android phone. Perhaps you prefer a more conventional smartphone, such as one from the Galaxy line by Samsung or the Pixel by Google. A truly cutting-edge foldable phone, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 or Z Flip 4, is another option.
Even phones that are all about fashion and originality are available, such as the Nothing Phone (1). The key is having more options where it counts with Android.
Apple is still catching up in many respects
The reason the iPhone is the most popular smartphone in the world is that iOS is straightforward and made to be user-friendly. Each iPhone is stylish and well-made, and it seamlessly connects with the Mac and the rest of the Apple ecosystem.
Despite the fact that the iPhone offers a lot, Apple is years behind several Android manufacturers in terms of cutting-edge technology and features. So picking the iPhone typically means falling behind if you love technology and want the newest and greatest.
