Undoubtedly, the past year has seen a significant increase in the media’s coverage of artificial intelligence, particularly after Google introduced Gemini, a rebranded version of the product. Gemini aims to become the main digital assistant on Android phones by bringing a plethora of AI features to several Google Suite apps.
Although Gemini’s potential to replace Google Assistant is still up for debate, Google has been developing AI features for its entire product line for years. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were introduced in October 2023, and they brought with them a brand-new photo-editing tool called Magic Editor in Google Photos. It was initially limited to Pixel 8 users, but it is now available on a wide range of other smartphones.
Magic Editor should begin to appear for users on any semi-recent Google Pixel or Samsung phone that has been updated to the most recent version of Google Photos (6.85) (via 9to5Google). It is allegedly present on both Apple iPhones and phones made by other manufacturers. Magic Editor will be available for free on Google Pixel phones, with no cap on the number of photographs users may alter and save. Unless they have a Google One Premium subscription, owners of phones made by Samsung, Apple, or other manufacturers will only be able to edit and save 10 images using Magic Editor each month.
The Magic of the Editor
The Magic Eraser tool, which can be used to remove things or items from photos, such as garbage cans or odd people, is undoubtedly something that many people who have used Google Photos recently have looked at. Imagine Magic Editor as Magic Eraser on steroids—it’s much more than that. With the program, you may, among other things, reframe images, eliminate undesired elements, shift objects completely, and alter the weather. We previously discussed Google’s May news that Magic Editor would be available on more phones. Now, only a few weeks later, almost everyone with a smartphone can use it. That’s fast, even for Google.
Google may not have invented this AI capability first, but it is undoubtedly making rapid progress. With the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung debuted its own AI-powered camera features, offering a plethora of “magically” editable photo settings and the much-hyped Live Translate. On the other hand, OnePlus’ Magic Eraser has received the exact opposite kind of buzz. As a substitute for Magic Eraser, users can download Snapseed or Adobe Lightroom from the Play Store if they don’t have a Google Pixel phone or just don’t want to use Google Photos.
