The next iPhone SE 2024 has apparently been scrapped by Apple

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who based his projections on sources in the supply chain, we might not be seeing a new iPhone SE in 2024. Following his forecast from last month that a fourth-generation iPhone SE could be delayed or canceled, Kuo claimed in a blog post on Friday that Apple had scrapped its plans for the phone’s production and shipping.

According to Kuo, the decision to discontinue the phone may have been made due to Apple’s lower-end devices not performing as well as anticipated (Bloomberg reported in September that there was a higher demand for iPhone 14 Pros than regular iPhone 14s) and worries that another price increase for the lineup may make it less appealing to consumers on a budget.

It won’t necessarily come as a surprise if Apple doesn’t release an iPhone SE 2024. Just a few weeks after the iPhone SE was announced, Kuo and Nikkei Asia revealed in March that Apple was already reducing the quantity of iPhone SEs it expected to create.

It’d be understandable if Apple wasn’t rushing to develop a follow-up to a phone that didn’t make a lot of money, especially considering that 2023 seems to be difficult for big tech businesses and the economy in general. However, we haven’t heard much about how the phone has been selling since then.

(By the same token, I’d contend that difficult financial circumstances would be the ideal moment to create a fantastic low-cost phone.) It is not necessarily the case that Apple would be following tradition by not launching a new model after two years, as the more affordable model has only undergone three versions.

There was a four-year hiatus after the first model was produced, despite the third-generation iPhone SE arriving two years after the second. However, it would be disappointing to see Apple allow the series to falter once more, especially because I was personally anticipating the following model would bring back the design of the iPhone Mini, as my colleague Sean Hollister predicted.

The manufacturer of the 5G modems for the current iPhones, Qualcomm, is one business that might not be upset to learn of the likely cancellation of a new iPhone SE. According to Kuo, Apple apparently developed its own versions of the chips and intended to test them in the upcoming iPhone SE 4th generation before introducing them to its flagship models. He claims that Apple’s modems haven’t always performed as well as Qualcomm’s, forcing the company to start over. As a result, it’s likely that the 2024 iPhone 16 will still use Qualcomm modems, which is supported by the chipmaker’s own prediction that it won’t stop being a major source of revenue until 2025.

All of this news should be taken with a grain of salt. Plans are still subject to change because 2024 is still one year away. Kuo is generally trustworthy, but no rumor source is flawless. He has consistently delayed his projections for the debut date of Apple’s virtual reality headset, stating that it will happen in 2022 and then in January 2023. He said on Friday that “problems with mechanical component drop testing and the availability of software development tools” could cause it to be postponed once more.

Even still, if Kuo is correct about one or both of his forecasts, it creates an unsettling image for Apple, especially when taken together with other rumors like the one that claimed Apple had to scale back its plans for the A16 chip in the iPhone 14 Pro due to uncommon engineering errors. Tim Cook, the company’s CEO, has a reputation for running a tight ship, particularly when it comes to the supply chain. But the pandemic’s continuing impacts, the economy’s deterioration, and the abrasive political climates around the world are putting those abilities to the test.
