Xiaomi is a smartphone manufacturer that offers some of the most cutting-edge photography technology available. However, it appears that the business hopes to have more of an impact on the imaging sector than just hardware. Presently, Xiaomi is spearheading the creation of a new HDR image standard.
A project named “High Dynamic Range (HDR) Still Images Part 2: Single-Layer Format” was recently accepted by the World Ultra-HD Video Industry Alliance (UWA Alliance). The project’s main goal is to develop a single-layer format for HDR still photos.
Leading this effort is Xiaomi, working with Huawei, Tencent, OPPO, Honor, and the China Electronics Technology Standardization Institute.
The project has a completion date of late 2024 and aims to establish a standardized framework for HDR image handling.
The approval certificate from the UWA Alliance shows that the project sets standards for two kinds of HDR still image formats: single-layer and double-layer.
The double-layer format combines HDR with Standard Dynamic Range (SDR), while the single-layer format exclusively features HDR.
The Alliance claims that the dual-layer HDR distribution format is almost finished and ready for quick approval and delivery.
Xiaomi is focusing its efforts on the single-layer distribution model since it will take more time.
The benefits of single-layer HDR photos are as follows, according to UWA:
Take HDR pictures and turn them into HDR images without having to make more SDR stuff.
2. HDR image editing is more effective and does not require SDR component adjustments.
3. It reduces transmission bandwidth and storage space consumption and has a higher compression efficiency.
4. Private information can be individually removed while sharing HDR photographs.
The new standard is supposed to specify the single-layer HDR image distribution format once it is finished. It includes instructions for creating, modifying, sending, and viewing single-layer HDR photographs, in addition to metadata, image formatting, and HDR to SDR conversion.
